The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has emphasized that Nigeria needs leaders like President Bola Tinubu to achieve the “Nigeria of our dreams”.

Wike made this statement during his 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he highlighted the importance of good leadership in driving national development.

Wike identified bad leadership as a significant obstacle to Nigeria’s progress, citing Chinua Achebe’s statement that “the trouble with Nigeria is fairly and squarely the absence of proper leadership”.

He noted that Nigerian leaders often emerge through self-serving conspiracies rather than national interests.

However, Wike praised President Tinubu, saying he has shown commitment to democracy and development. Tinubu’s leadership style, according to Wike, embodies the qualities needed to drive Nigeria forward, including sound character, resilience, and the ability to make informed decisions.

Wike highlighted Tinubu’s courageous decision to remove fuel subsidies, which has given states more resources to develop and reduced debt accumulation.

Some notable initiatives under Tinubu’s leadership include

Zonal/Regional Commissions, empowering zones and regions to drive development and decentralize power, security Reforms.

Also among them are proper funding and training of security forces to address insecurity, forest guards recruitmen, approving the recruitment of forest guards to combat banditry and terrorism.

Stakeholders, including Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State and the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, praised Wike’s leadership style and vision for Nigeria. The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, described Wike as a fearless and upright politician.

The concept of the “Nigeria of our dreams” encompasses a nation where citizens have access to quality education, improved infrastructure, stable governance, and economic opportunities.

It’s a dream of dignity, security, and the chance to break free from poverty. According to Wike, President Tinubu’s leadership is key to achieving this vision.
