Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu has expressed delight following his match-winning display for his club Trabzonspor in their Turkish Super Lig opener against Kocaelispor on Monday.
The 31-year-old, who recently completed his permanent move from English Championship outfit Southampton to Trabzonspor this summer, had sustained an ankle injury in a pre-season fixture against Azerbaijani side Araz Nakhchivan last month and was tipped to be on the sidelines for as long as four weeks.
However, the former Genk forward made a speedy recovery to secure a starting berth in coach Fatih Tekke’s starting lineup, going on to feature for 77 minutes, where he had four shots and scored Trabzonspor’s only goal in the 49th minute, as they started their domestic campaign with all three points at home.
The lanky attacker took to his official Instagram account on social media where he wrote, “Good to be back! For the fans, always.”
Also, Trabzonspor gaffer Fatih Tekke stressed the need to start the season with a win, “First of all, the three points are very valuable to us. But after the goal in the second half, our speed were not very good. I think the most important thing is to start the league with three points today.”
Before his second spell at Trabzonspor, Onuachu had scored 17 goals in 25 matches during his first stint, establishing himself as a fan favourite before returning to parent club Southampton for the 2024/25 Premier League season.
He finished the campaign as Southampton’s top scorer in the Premier League with four goals across 25 appearances, but his efforts could not save the South Coast from suffering relegation to the Championship.
