Foremost youth organisations in the South-East, South East Youth Assembly and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Youth Wing, have urged United States President Donald Trump to partner his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Tinubu, in addressing the nation’s security challenges, rather than resorting to threats of military intervention.
The convener of South East Youth Assembly, Ugochukwu Nwachukwu, and National Publicity Secretary, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Youth Wing, Mazi Chika Adiele, made the call during a press conference in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Monday.
This appeal comes after Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”, and his accompanying threat to deploy American military forces over alleged large-scale persecution and killings of Christians.
Nwachukwu and Art Adiele in a press statement jointly signed after the press briefing, insisted that what countries like Nigeria need mostly from the International community is a strategic military alliance with the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in a bid to wiping out these murderous elements from the country.
The statement reads in part, “As you all are abreast of the global attention that our beloved nation is facing due to designation of our country by the President of the United States of America, Mr Donald Trump, as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’.
“We are indeed saddened by the insecurity that has threatened the fabric of our country by Islamic extremists.
“Following the consultation with eminent leaders and other stakeholders, we therefore recognise the unwavering commitments of the President of Nigeria and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in tackling these existential security crisis and other social economic downturn.
“As a the foremost youth organisations, we strongly believe that for countries like Nigeria, what we need most from the International community is a strategic military alliance in collaboration with the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in a bid to wiping out these murderous elements from the surface of our country.”
According to the group, Nigerian citizens deserve tranquillity and stability with believe that the fundamental principles of democracy is freedom, equity and justice.
“Therefore, we pledge as follows: that we stand firmly in solidarity with the sovereignty of our beloved country and the President Tinubu.
“That we demand an urgent close door meeting with the National Security Advisor, Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu to proffer our timeless intelligence as a demonstration of our love for country.
“That the security architecture of this country deserves a total overhaul in line with global standards.
“And finally, we appeal to South East Youths to remain calm and eternally vigilant.”
