The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old man, Ademola Joshua, over allegations of incest involving his sister’s 15-year-old daughter.

It was learnt that Joshua was arrested on Sunday in the Ilara-Mokin area of Ondo State, following a report made to the police.

Confirming the arrest in a statement on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said the suspect had allegedly been committing the act for some time before the survivor’s uncle alerted the police, leading to his apprehension.

The statement read, “On 4th January, 2025, one Adewale of Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, reported to the Command that the above-mentioned suspect had been engaging in unlawful sexual activities with his sister’s daughter, a 15-year-old minor.

“The complainant stated that the act was uncovered following enquiries into the cause of the victim’s pregnancy.

“Upon receipt of this disturbing report, the case was immediately referred to the Gender-Based Violence Unit of the Command for discreet and thorough investigation.”

The command said the suspect, who is currently in police custody, would be prosecuted after the completion of investigations.

It stated, “The Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women and children and to ensuring that perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence face the full weight of the law without compromise.

“This arrest aligns with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, whose reform-driven leadership continues to strengthen gender-sensitive policing, promote accountability, and enhance strategic responses to sexual and gender-based violence nationwide.

“The Ondo State Police Command remains resolute in translating this vision into visible actions that build public trust and enhance community safety.

“While appreciating members of the public for their timely and courageous reporting, the Command urges all residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible and actionable information to the police for swift intervention.

“Together, we can build a safer society for our children and generations unborn.”

Reports of older men sexually abusing minors, particularly the girl-child, are not uncommon in the country.
