A road crash on Wednesday evening along the Ewekoro section of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State, has claimed the life of a vulcaniser who was repairing a truck tyre by the roadside.

It was learnt on Thursday from the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, that two other persons — a driver and his assistant — sustained injuries in the accident.

Akinbiyi explained that a HOWO truck had been parked by the roadside while its tyre was being fixed by the vulcaniser when another truck developed a tyre burst.

The burst reportedly caused the second vehicle, a MAN Diesel truck, to lose control and ram into the stationary HOWO truck.

He said, “A fatal road traffic crash occurred at the Lafarge First Gate, Ewekoro, along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway on Wednesday.

“It involved a MAN Diesel truck with number plate PKA 923 YR and a white HOWO truck without a number plate.

“The MAN Diesel truck suffered a tyre burst and lost control, ramming into the stationary HOWO truck that a vulcaniser was repairing by the roadside.

“Three persons were involved — a vulcaniser, a driver and his assistant. The vulcaniser died while the two others sustained injuries.”

Akinbiyi added that the injured victims were taken to the General Hospital, Ifo, for treatment, while the deceased was deposited in the hospital’s morgue.

“The two injured victims have been taken to the General Hospital, Ifo, while the corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital morgue, Ifo,” he said.
