Multichoice Africa has announced plans to terminate Showmax services in the near future.

According to information gathered by The Nation, the Showmax Board has made the decision to discontinue the streaming platform service in the near future.

This is coming months after Canal+ acquired the cable broadcasting group based in South Africa.

However, it is unclear if the decision to terminate Showmax services as an African streaming platform is hinged on the acquisition by Canal+.

In September 2025, French media giant Canal+ officially completed its acquisition of MultiChoice Group, gaining control of DStv, GOtv, and Showmax in a deal valued at approximately $3 billion.

It was further gathered that the decision to discontinue Showmax services wasn’t an entirely easy one, but the company had gone ahead to take the decision in the interest of the overall group.

An insider hinted, “This decision reflects our focus on strengthening our overall digital offering and ensuring long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming environment.

“Importantly, at the moment, there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time.”
