A female passenger has died while six others sustained severe injuries in a road accident that occurred at New Castle Bus Stop, inward Gbagada, along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Taofiq said the incident, which happened over the weekend, involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY that reportedly veered off the road and rammed into a roadside culvert.

According to him, the impact of the collision threw a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the expressway.

He said an oncoming articulated trailer approaching the scene was unable to stop in time and ran over the passenger, resulting in her immediate death.

He stated, “Reports revealed that a Volkswagen commercial bus (LSD 654 XY) veered off course and violently rammed into a roadside culvert along the corridor.” The impact of the collision forcefully ejected a female passenger from the vehicle onto the expressway, with 6 others seriously injured with multiple fractures.

“In a tragic turn of events, an oncoming articulated trailer approaching the scene was unable to forestall the sudden occurrence and consequently ran over the passenger who had fallen on the roadway, resulting in her immediate death.”

He added that six other occupants of the bus, including the driver, sustained varying degrees of injuries, with some reportedly suffering multiple fractures.

Taofiq noted that LASTMA officials cordoned off the accident scene to prevent further crashes and facilitate emergency response operations.

He added that personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for treatment, while officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the remains of the deceased from the scene.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

He also urged motorists and commercial vehicle operators to ensure regular vehicle maintenance, particularly the braking system, to prevent avoidable road accidents.
