The purported resignation pronouncement by Mr. Remi Aboderin as the general secretary of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) during the inauguration of the Progressive Professional Boxers Association has been met with resistance from the stakeholders in Nigerian professional boxing.
Aboderin, who reportedly tendered his resignation amid the ongoing dispute between the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) and the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF) over the governance and control of professional boxing in Nigeria, had been urged to rescind his decision.
Sources within the boxing community suggest that the conflict centers on regulatory authority, licensing, and the administration of professional boxing activities in Nigeria, with both organizations claiming oversight responsibilities. The situation has led to tensions within the sport and concerns about the future structure of professional boxing administration in the country, particularly regarding how these disputes may affect the governance and operational effectiveness of boxing organisations moving forward.
Aboderin’s resignation has faced significant opposition from within the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control. The NBBofC President, Dr. Rafiu Oladipupo, alongside several professional boxers and promoters, has expressed their discontent with his decision to step down, asserting that his leadership is crucial during this pivotal moment in the administration of boxing in Nigeria.
Some stakeholders believe his resignation could further deepen the crisis, and this must not be allowed at this auspicious time.
As stakeholders continue consultations aimed at resolving the dispute and stabilizing the sport with calls for dialogue, clear governance structures, and unity to prevent administrative conflicts from affecting the growth of professional boxing in Nigeria.
Leading the pack of boxers that rejected his supposed resignation are the World Boxing Union Cruiserweight Champion Kabiru Towolawi, Hamza Idris, Bolatito “Black Tito” Oluwole, Sikiru Sogbesan, and Blessing Chukwuede Amin, among others.
As of the time of filing this report, it is clear that Aboderin has decided to forge on since the boxers have all given him a clean bill to continue, especially coupled with the Board’s express rejection, which was conveyed by the President Dr. Oladipo and Vice President Prince Ade Olofin at the occasion.
