Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to longtime rival, Lionel Messi following the Argentine’s emotional farewell from international football, describing his former on-pitch rival’s achievements with Argentina as a story that “will live on forever.”
Ronaldo made the remarks in a comment on Messi’s Instagram post on Wednesday, following the Argentine’s final appearance for his country. “Leo, so many years defending your country and a story that will live on forever. You have all my respect for everything you’ve achieved with Argentina. A hug,” the Portuguese star wrote.
Messi played his final match for Argentina on Tuesday night, scoring once and providing two assists as the South American champions defeated Benin 3-0 in a friendly at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The 39-year-old, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, described the occasion as “the saddest day of my career” after more than two decades representing his country.
The exchange highlighted the mutual respect that has developed between Ronaldo and Messi despite their intense rivalry, which dominated world football for more than 15 years. Their individual battles, particularly during their years at Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively, helped define an era in the sport.
Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team in late August, following the team’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. He cited the emotional and physical toll of the tournament, as well as the illness and subsequent death of his father, Jorge Messi, among the factors behind his decision.
He ended his international career with a record 208 appearances and 126 goals for Argentina. Messi also captained the national team to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title and Copa América triumphs.
Ronaldo and Messi have continued to express admiration for each other in recent years, including Ronaldo’s message of support following the death of Messi’s father earlier this year. The two stars remain major global sporting figures, with Messi playing for Inter Miami and Ronaldo for Al-Nassr as they enter the later stages of their careers.
