The Rivers State Police Command said its operatives have arrested six policemen seen in a viral video brutalising a man in a location on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The spokesperson for the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this while speaking with our correspondent on Thursday afternoon.

In the video seen by our correspondent, the man was seen with blood dripping from his head to his face and down to his clothes.

The man said the policemen waved him to a stop and demanded his car’s tinted permit, but he replied that he had tried to renew it at the relevant agency but was experiencing delays.

He further said that without listening, they kept dragging him and his brother, labeling them criminals, while they also assaulted a female partner who was with them, and eventually hit his head with an object.

He stated, “They (the policemen) are taking my vehicle to the station for no reason. They said we are criminals. The girl who was with us was well beaten and stripped.

“They said I should give them ₦1m because I didn’t have a tinted permit.  I told them I didn’t have that kind of money and that I had gone to the Internal Revenue Service, but was told their machine was bad. They tore my clothes, assaulted Anambra NYSC member recounts ordeal

“I begged that I had ₦20,000 to give to them. My brother, who was with me, was slapped by them, and he fell.

“They dragged me, and I asked them what my offence was. Before I knew it, they hit me on my head. I fell and was covered in blood all over my body,” he explained painfully.

Meanwhile, Iringe-Koko said the arrested operatives were currently in detention and would face an orderly room trial.

She said the victim and the policemen were earlier interrogated by the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, who ordered his monitoring team to ensure a thorough probe.

She stated, “The six policemen and the victim came to the CP and said their sides of the story. The CP then ordered the detention of the six policemen and that they should be tried.

“The CP asked his monitoring team to carry out a full-scale investigation on the matter.”
