The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit has appealed to parents to assist candidates taking the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination by giving them time to concentrate on their studies.
The advice was contained in a press release by the Amir of the MSSN Lagos, Dr. Saheed Ashafa, on the organisation’s observation on the 2017 May/June WASSCE.
He recalled that the examination continues fully this week.
According to Ashafa, among the reports gathered by officials of the MSSN Lagos on the preparation of students ahead of the commencement of the WASSCE is that some students have little time to prepare for the examination.
Ashafa said while this may be traced to unseriousness on the part of some students, others were being overburdened by house chores.
Regardless of the economic challenges, Ashafa explained that the success of every candidate in the examination should be a priority to both the schools, government and parents.
He said, “Parents/Guardians are advised to assist their children/ wards to concentrate on their studies and prepare sufficiently for each paper as the exam progresses. Parent should reduce chores and works given to students at this critical period in their lives.
“They (parents) should rather encourage them and monitor their activities and ensure they properly comply with the demand of the current academic challenges.
“We understand that the prevailing economic situation in the country is overwhelming but success of the students in strategic examination like WASSCE is part of the hope of every family and the nation at large.”
He subsequently urged teachers and parents to desist from the act of encouraging candidates to engage in examination malpractice.
He noted that examination malpractices was one of the vices affecting standard education in the country.
“If we truly want our education system to grow, all stakeholders must work together to ensure a transparent system of examining candidates. It is appalling that some parents and tearchers are encouraging malpractice which should not be. Candidates must also know that when they are caught in examinational malpractice , their career may be ruined,” he added.
While wishing candidates taking the examination success, Ashafa counselled them to obey examination rules and be hard-working.
He advised them to ensure maximum concentration regardless of the distractions that may come their way.
“This is your life and you must fight for it. The beauty of your success lies in your personal effort and ability to pass without any examination practices. This gives you the needed zeal, courage and makes you go farther in life. We wish all students a resounding success in the 2017 WAEC exams,” Ashafa added.
