The Deputy Chairman of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Men’s National Team Competition Committee, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, OFR, ROI, has applauded the elevation of Samson Adamu to the position of Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Pinnick, under whose tenure as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Adamu entered CAF as competitions director, hailed the appointment of the Nigerian to the exalted position of scribe of the continental football governing body.
“Congratulations to Samson Adamu on this well-deserved elevation to the position of Ag. General Secretary of CAF. You have proved your capacity, and I have no doubts that you are going to deliver on the job and make Nigeria and Africa proud,” observed Pinnick, who is also special advisor to the CAF president.
The former FIFA Executive Committee member stressed that the appointment of Adamu was really a landmark, as it was the first time that a Nigerian would occupy that exalted position in CAF.
“To be the first Nigerian to be appointed general secretary of CAF is a landmark achievement. You attained this height because you have demonstrated professionalism and deep understanding of the administration of football at the highest level. I also believe that greater glory awaits you after this honour.”
As a former CAF Executive Committee member, Pinnick urged the newly appointed scribe to remain diligent and carry out his tasks without fear or favor. “CAF as a body is filled with various interests. What you need to do to succeed is to do the right things according to the statutes that govern football administration in the continent. No doubt, you have the capacity to further strengthen the administrative framework of African football.”
Adamu’s name was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and ratified by the Congress at its meeting on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo, Egypt.
He replaced Congolese lawyer and occupant of the position until Sunday, Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down in the wake of turmoil that followed the decision of the CAF to strip Senegal of the AFCON 2025 title and hand it over to Morocco.
Mosengo-Omba, who is also a Swiss national, is believed to have his eyes on the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation.
