The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has been commended by the All Progressives Congress (APC) youth under the auspices of League of Patriotic and Progressive Youths over the recent passage of amendment to the Electoral Act, 2010 by the Senate.
The group in a letter signed by its Coordinator, Comrade Dominic Alancha, and addressed to Saraki, said they are also proud of the Senate President’s “several accomplishments and contributions to the nurturing of the nation’s democracy.
The letter reads in part: “We write to convey our continued warm appreciation to you for amongst several other reasons, the enablement to steer the ship of the Nigerian Senate with admirable courage, insight, candor and determination to keep its independence in the face of both surreptitious and brazen intimidation from the executive and even beyond.
“As young elements with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and stakeholders in the Nigerian Project, we are proud of your several accomplishments and contributions to nurturing democracy into a mighty oak tree in the wilderness of shifting interests and varying loyalty like never witnessed since 1999.
“Your courage, calm disposition and fierce independence resolve, determination to foster an independent Senate has not gone unchallenged.
“Matter of fact, as living witnesses to your manner of emergence and continued stay in Office against the wishes of some fathom leaders who have continued to provoke both media, legal and political onslaught against you in an unprecedented manner beats our imagination. We wonder and ask aloud, ‘how have you held on?’
“The main thrust of writing you for now is to salute your industry, lion pride courage, commitment to the independence and respect for the Senate and worthy contribution to the legacy of ennobling laws which you have superintended over since 2015.
“The recent passage of the Electoral Act by the Senate is perhaps the most profound and innovative in our political architecture since 1999. On behalf of the discerning Nigerian youths we salute and commend you even in the face of continuing contrived crisis,” the group stated.
