The long 8th Afro-Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge competition officially commenced on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, bringing together leading university basketball teams and delegations from seven African countries in a celebration of sport, education, and sustainability.

Adding a unique dimension to this year’s championship is the Green FASU Initiative, a groundbreaking climate action programme that integrates environmental sustainability into university sports.

The initiative underscores the commitment of the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) to promoting environmentally responsible sporting events while inspiring student-athletes to become ambassadors for sustainable development across the continent.

On the court, defending men’s champions United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) of Kenya will begin their title defense in a challenging Pool C that features strong opposition from the University of Abuja and the University of Ghana, setting the stage for some of the tournament’s most competitive encounters.

The host, University of Ibadan, will open the men’s competition against Kisii University of Kenya in what promises to be a thrilling opening fixture. With home supporters expected to fill the venue, the hosts will be eager to make a strong statement in front of their fans.

The women’s tournament is equally poised to deliver exciting basketball action, with several continental powerhouses competing for the coveted title. A potential clash between USIU-Africa and the University of Ibadan in the knockout stages is already generating anticipation and could prove decisive in determining the eventual champions.

Beyond continental honors, the stakes are even higher this year. The winners of both the men’s and women’s championships will earn the right to represent Africa at the FISU University World Cup later this year, adding further significance to every game played in Ibadan.

With defending champions, national title holders, emerging university basketball powers, and student-athletes from across seven African nations converging in Nigeria’s premier university city, the 8th Afro-Varsity 3×3 Basketball Championship promises high-level competition, unforgettable moments, and a showcase of the very best of African university basketball.
