All is not well within the sports circle in Nigeria as the Ministry of Sports on Thursday issued a new set of guidelines for Federation elections, limiting the tenure of candidates to two-terms of eight years.

According to the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung the new guidelines also mean anybody who had served two terms in office is ineligible to run in the 20 June elections.

Among other things, the guidelines also states that a person serving in any capacity at the continental or international level is barred from holding an active position in the home Federation.

By implication, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Habu Gumel who also doubles as the volleyball federation boss is ineligible to contest.

Also, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) president, Solomon Ogba, Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) chairman, Tijani Umar and the chairman of Nigeria Handball Federation, Yusuf Dauda are all ineligible to stand.

Further provisions of the guidelines released on Thursday states that no candidate for membership of any association should be under the age of 20.

It also states that a candidate must hold a minimum of school certificate, while presidential aspirants must not be less than 30 years.

Despite the diverse opinion over the provisions of the reviewed guidelines, stakeholders were in accord on the election date set for 20 June, 2017 in Abuja.
