D’Tigers on Friday continued their winning streak at the ongoing Afrobasket with a 71-55 win over Kenya in their second group game at the Kigali Arena in Rwanda.
The Nigerians won the first quarter 20-8, but they were pegged back by the East Africans, who claimed the second quarter 18-14 to take the score to 34-26 at half time.
The Kenyans were the more purposeful side in the third quarter, winning 15-13 but the final quarter ultimately belonged to D’Tigers, who cut down on their fouls and turnovers to win 22-16 for a total score of 71-55.
Uzodinma Utomi was Nigeria’s top scorer with 17 points. He added two rebounds, and two steals, while Jeremiah Mordi contributed 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, three steals and one block.
Ikenna Ndugba, Jordan Ogundiran and Tarekeyi Edogi all contributed nine points respectively.
The Nigerians made 13 turnovers as compared to Kenya, who had 28, with D’Tigers capitalising on their errors to earn 21 points.
D’Tigers had a total of 35 rebounds as compared to Kenya’s 56, which they will need to work on ahead of their next game against Ivory Coast on Sunday.
Nigeria scored 34 per cent from the two point line, while they had a 33 per cent success rate from the three points line and converting 62 per cent of their free throws.
In their early game played on Friday, Uganda beat Cameroon 80-66, to record their first win of the event.
