As former Super Eagles stars, Austin Eguavoen and Ike Shorunmu put pen on paper to join Nigeria Professional Football League side, Sunshine Stars,, chairman of the three man committee set up to re-position the Ondo State Football Agency, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye stated that the decision to hire them as coach and goalkeeper trainer was borne out of the need to help stabilise the fortunes of the Akure based club after a slow start in the ongoing season.
Elegbeleye, who was a former vice chairman of Sunshine stars football club, expressed that both Eguavoen and Shorunmu have been handed the mandate of ensuring that the club do not get relegated and also ensure they keep the team in the top half of the table after which they will have their contract reviewed for possible extension if they do well by the end of the season.
“We’re bringing them to Sunshine Stars to bring a better technical input into the team because we are not doing well at the moment. So we believe their coming together with the assistance of other local coaches in the team will help stabilise the team,” Elegbeleye said.
Both coaches will have a short term contract, with an option of an extension at the end of the 2016/2017 NPFL season based on performance and acceptance by all.
“The contract is to the end of the season, if they do well and the powers at the end of the season says they should stay, then their contract will be extended,” the former Director General of the National Sports Commission added.
Sunshine stars currently sit 18th on the NPFL table after 18 matches and also have a game in hand.
