Nigerians Urged To Rise To Their Civic Responsibilities

Nigerians have been urged to change their lackadaisical attitude towards payment of various taxes to allow more progressive developments in the Country.

The father of an Ibadan Philanthropist and politician, Chief Akin Alabi, Pa Adediran Alabi who made this call in Ibadan during the week said for the country to attain its higher desire, there is need for the people of the country to have a change of attitude towards payment of taxes.

Chief Alabi said “in the advanced countries of the world payment of taxes is obligatory to all citizens irrespective of their calibre but here in Nigeria it is only civil servants that are paying, adding that operators of big companies and big establishments do not see it as a thing of importance to pay taxes, which is being used by the government to provide the needs of the society.”

He submitted that the Nigerian governments at all level are doing their best, but they can not satisfy everybody.

He enjoined Nigerian politicians to desist from the attitude of stealing public funds as well as misappropriation of funds meant for the development of their communities.

The 84 year old Chief Adediran Alabi from Ajewogbo village in Egbeda local government area of Oyo state also, urged Nigerians not to see politics as a money making venture but as a means of contributing one’s quota towards the development of his father land.

He maintained that politics of their time, when he served as a Councillor in Egbeda local government during the Babaginda era was a sacrifice to the people and the community.

He added that the presently running presidential system of government in Nigeria is a waste, because it is too costly to run. He said he preferred the British system of government, the Parliamentary system of government.

While blaming the former Colonial administration Nigeria over ‘placing the North above the South’ in the country, the ex co-operative manager enjoined Nigerians to go back to the former regional government, whereby regions will be entrusted to manage their resources.

He lamented that there is a fall in the standard of education in the Country and blamed it on the poor performance of stake holders, government, parents and students, adding that the government is no longer serious about education in the country, as it has failed to provide infrastructure, training and funding of teachers.

He said teachers in the private schools are better than public school teachers in Nigeria of today.
