Rt. Hon. Suraju Ishola Adekunbi, the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, has challenged Nigerian youths to take advantage of the social media platforms to exchange ideas on development issues and ensure promotion of national cohesion for the socio-economic advancement of the nation.
Adekunbi, who gave the charge while fielding questions from journalists in Abeokuta, explained that the young generation needed to be very careful by exercising greater decorum, while exploring and disseminating information on the social media especially as the electioneering period draws nearer.
He counseled that the nation’s dignity and values should not be jettisoned in whatever communication items being engaged in on social media, saying that “elections would come and go but the aftermath of any destructive media campaign could not be redressed”.
According to him, social media should remain platforms for sharing analytical and constructive ideas for societal development and growth, adding that anyone with better ideas on governance could share such or better still, join politics to offer service rather than discrediting people in government.
The Speaker advised them to be agents of transformation and avoid truncating the nation’s democracy, saying the success of any democratic government would go a long way in aiding national development.
