South West Speakers Move To Give Legal Strength To Western Nigeria Security Network

The Speakers under the aegis of Conference of South West Speakers have come together to give the Western Nigeria Security Network (Operation Amotekun) a legal framework.

At the Security Summit held in Ibadan at Mahogany Hotel and Suites on Thursday, January 23, 2020, the Speakers promised to initiate a bill at their various Houses of Assembly to ensure that the security outfit is recognized.

The Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Mudashir Obasa, who is also the Chairman, Conference of Speakers in Nigeria, disclosed that the security outfit has come to stay.

“Definitely, it has come to stay, there is no doubt about that, Amotekun is in existence and we are wishing Amotekun long life. It is going to take normal processes, first reading, second reading, public hearing and third reading and at the end of the day, we call for our governors’ assent and it becomes law.”

In his opening address, the chairman, Conference of South West Speakers, Hon. Oleyelogun Bamidele, maintained that worsening security situation over the past years has become worrisome, therefore, necessitated the alternative mean of providing security for lives and properties.

The Ondo State House of Assembly speaker commended the governments of all the states in the South West for their pro-activeness in combating the security challenges confronting the region.

He posited that the step will go a long way in restoring the people’s confidence.

“As legislatures, we must do our bit to complement the initiated efforts of our governors through legislations that will give legal strength to the security force.”

The Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, commended the Development Agenda for South Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission for its effort in coming up with the security initiative.

He reiterated that the South West Nigeria have keyed into the vital need for regional cohesion, integration and synergy for all round growth and development.

Also in attendance were Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye, his counterpart from Osun, Timothy Owoeye and Ogun State, Olakunle Oluomo.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security, Fatai Owoseni and Director General, DAWN Commission, Oluseye Oyeleye have briefed the Conference of South West Speakers on the situation report on the security outfit.
