The sixth Ekiti State House of Assembly at its Special Plenary Session to celebrate its first anniversary has passed a motion to name the Ekiti Civic Centre after the Governor of the State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and it will be known as John Kayode Fayemi Cultural Centre.

The above motion was moved by a lawmaker representing Moba 1, Hon. Adeyemi Ajibade and seconded by his colleague from Ikole II, Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye and adopted by the whole house.

Giving an account of his first year in Office at the Ekiti State House of Assembly Chamber over the last 365 days, the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Funminiyi Afuye told the Assemblymen that the 6th EKHA has been able to succesfully passed a total of 19 out of the 25 Executive Bills presented to the House by the Governor of the State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The Speaker explained further that the Governor has already assented to all the 19 bills passed remaining six (6) that are before different Committees of the House for necessary attention and consideration.

At the first anniversary Special Plenary Session, held at the hallowed chamber, the 26 members of the 6th Ekiti State House of Assembly thanked the Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; the Wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi and the Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Honourable Funminiyi Afuye for their supports, quality leadership roles and cooperation which led to the outstanding success and performance recorded by the House.

At the press conference addressed after the special plenary session at the Ekiti Assembly hallowed chamber on Monday, the Ekiti State House of Assembly restated its determination to invite the former Governor Ayodele Fayose at the appropriate time to make clarifications on some financial dealings he undertook during his reign in the state. This clarification was made by the House Committee Chairman on Media and Public Affairs, Honourable Yemisi Ayokunle while responding to a question on why the 6th Assembly has failed to invite him since 2019 when the House first considered inviting the former Governor.

The Assembly spokesperson went ahead to clarify that a Committee has been set up to discuss the issue of the invitation to Fayose and that the summons will be extended to the former Governor at the right time.

It would be recalled that an invitation to Fayose was discussed on the floor of the House on why the passage of N10 billion supplementary budget was hurriedly done 30 days to Governor Fayose’s exit on October 15th, 2018. It would also be recalled that the discussion on the plan to invite Fayose to answer questions on the above prompted the former governor storming the Assembly complex uninvited in December 2019, to clarify issues, but he was resisted.

Yemisi Ayokunle maintained that Fayose had never been formally invited. “We didn’t invite him but we were about discussing his issue, he came into the House as a meddlesome interloper. There is a Committee in place already deliberating on his issue. We are not in a hurry. When the time comes, we will give an update about his invitation to the public”.

The lawmaker praised Fayemi for putting up structures that facilitate robust executive-legislature smooth operation in the state, describing him as worthy of being immortalised.

“The motion moved on the renaming of the civic centre after Governor Fayemi speaks for itself and once all the lawmakers have agreed through a voice vote, we are going to pass our resolution across to the executive to effect this change.

Ayokunle stated that the already passed and assented bills were those that had fine tuned governance for the executive and increased democratic dividends to the people.

The lawmaker added that the Assembly has been thorough in the discharge of its oversight functions across Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government as well as local governments to ensure financial probity.

He added that six other bills are at different stages of legislative procedure and will be passed soon for executive assent.

“17 motions were passed into resolutions and it involved those that were executed by the executive to address emergency situations that will be for the benefit of all citizens”.
