Lekan Ogunbameru recently emerged winner of the carnival-like Captain and Lady Captain’s day inaugural tournament held at Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), Onireke, Ibadan where more than 250 golfers participated.
The tournament which was supposed to have been held since March this year, but differ due to the pandemic outbreak was organised last weekend to usher in the new executives for the prestigious Club led by Mr. Ola Ibironke popularly known as Dudu Heritage and the Lady Captain, Mrs. Mary Okunola .
Ogunbameru, a staff of the University College Hospital (UCH) and a member of IGC who now earned handicap 3.3 after his outing retuned with scores of 74 gross, 70 Net count back to emerge winner of the tournament while Amubioya closely followed as first runners up with 81 gross 70 net.
The Captain of the Club, Mr Ola Ibironke in his speech thanked all and sundry that worked assiduously to make the event a success while assuring of the readiness of his team to deliver on all promises and pledging to work on the achievement of his predecessor with the help of his executives.
He said “My being the 24th Captain of IGC, to me, is ordained by God. It’s part of what I’m meant to fulfill in life because I never wanted to play golf and talk less of becoming the Captain. As a fact, I was forced to join the Club by my very good friend, Prince Bayo Adeleke.
“I must recognize good gestures of some members, and that’s why I must thank the duo of Architect Olukayode Fakunle and Rasheed Adekunle Adigun that constructed the resting place on hole 18 which serve 15, 16 and 17 when it rains or when we want to relax while waiting for the advance team.
“How can I not remember my friends Otunba Abimbola Davis, Asiwaju Olumide Osunsina, Efe Edward, CP Dejo Oyelowo Rtd and others that rallied round us by donating money to make sure that the whole club house was fumigated in preparation for our opening after initial lockdown. And Dare Adeleke who gave the first financial donation to open the rough of hole 4 which gave way to other donations towards the clearing of other rough on the course”, Dudu, the IGC Captain noted.
Also, the Lady Captain, Mrs Mary Okunola in his remark thanked the sponsors of the tournament and the Ladies section of the Club for the kind gesture, while quoting the world’s Sport Psychologist Dr. Bob Rotella which says “Golf is about how well you accept, respond to, and score with your misses much more so that it is a game of your perfect shots.
“Like all sports, the game requires patience and discipline. And it is what has been displayed by us all in this competition. And that is why I must thank you all for your esteemed presence here at IGC for this epic golf event”, Okunola noted.
