Dr Kayode Fayemi’s government in Ekiti State is set to commence emission test on vehicles, generators and other petrol or diesel engines in the State.

The State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Barrister Iyabo Fakunle Okieimen who made this known in Ado Ekiti said that the move is part of efforts at battling the effects of global warming and ensure a healthy environment for people in the State.

Okieimen stressed that conducting the test is crucial to achieving the goal of reducing air pollutants emitted from the exhaust of petrol and diesel engines towards decreasing air pollution to tolerable level.

Quoting the World Health Organization (WHO), Okieimen noted that the harmful emissions from the exhaust of engine constitute major contributory factors to poor air quality that cause killer diseases such as lower respiratory infections, Tuberculosis, cancers cerebral vascular and Ischemic Heart Diseases.

She added that the emissions also deplete the ozone layer which prevents direct radiation of the sun thus thereby making the environment to experience unnecessary heat.

Okieimen solicited the support of all stakeholders for government’s efforts at ensuring the well-being of the people and assured that the officials that would conduct the test have been directed to be thorough and professional.
