LASIEC Restates Commitment Towards Free, Fair LG Polls

The Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has restated its commitment towards conducting a free, fair and credible election on  Saturday.

The elections are taking place across the 20 Local Government Areas as well as the 37 Local Community Development Areas of Lagos State.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Retired Justice Ayotunde Phillips restated the above while addressing a press conference at the Headquarters of the Commission on Friday to brief the media and the people of Lagos State on its final preparation towards conducting a free, fair and credible polls in the State on Saturday.

Speaking further, the LASIEC boss, Retired Justice Ayotunde Phillips announced the participation of 16 political parties taking part in the Lagos poll against the earlier 12 quoted in the YIAGA Africa’s press release by PMParrot.

According to her, she said: “the non-sensitive materials have been deployed across the 57 LGA’s and LCDA’s while the sensitive materials would also be deployed in the early hours of the Saturday poll. She stated that INEC card readers would be used for the polls as she urged Lagos voters to make use of either their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) or Temporary Voters Card (TVC) issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The LASIEC boss added that infra-red thermometers have also been deployed to test voters for Covid-19 at the polling units”.

Retired Justice Ayotunde Phillips revealed further that “in situations where the card readers failed to authenticate the voter’s card of voters at the polling units, she stated that the incidence forms which have been provided by LASIEC at the polling units would be given to the voter’s to fill by the electoral officials before they are allowed to vote during the election”.

She urged and used the opportunity to instruct the Electoral Officials at the polling units to give preference to breast feeding mother’s to cast their votes during the election. She maintained that proper arrangements have been concluded with the NSCDC Security Officials and the Neighborhood Security Watch in Lagos State to provide adequate security during the polls.

The LASIEC boss also used the opportunity to condemn the attitude of some political parties who are substituting the names of some of their candidates on the eve of the election.
