The Special Adviser to the wife of Ekiti State Governor, Barrister Shirley Atane, has advocated capital punishment for anybody involved in rape.

She made the call in Ado-Ekiti during a programme organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) to celebrate this year’s International Day of Girl Child with the theme “Digital Generation, Our Generation”, where she spoke on the subject, “What to know about Rape and GBV Law”

Barister Atane lamented the increasing rate of rape and other sexual harassment practices in the country, hence, the need for government at all levels to domesticate Gender Based violence law in order to check the ugly trend.

Going forward, she mentioned that every child should prevent rape from happening but if per-adventure it happens, she thereby gave some steps to take, which include: Do not birth and clean up the person, do not change your clothes also, during the process of rape, scratch the person, go to Sexual Assualts’ Referral Centre, or see the Gender Officer of a Police station.

In Barrister Shirley’s words, “everybody should have equal access in every aspect. So, we don’t relegate women to the background and lose women with sound intellect.”

To conclude her session, she gave some hotlines that would help when such cases happen, which are: 08000088888, 08108311361, 08067577657, 07050752287, and  07039786904 on Female Gender Mutilation.

On the other hand, Comrade Funmi Falae, who addressed the theme, “Digital Generation, Our Generation” explored available human resources in stimulating the human interest of the girl child in the digital world, bridging the gender gap and birthing a more inclusive digital generation of value-based leaders in Nigeria.

Comrade Falae did not also fail to expound the valuable resources that can be accessible for the girl child in this present generation.

Also, the chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs Fatimoh Bello, stressed the importance of the seminar: the need for every child to be inclined with the digital world and how imperative it is for all stakeholders, teachers, governments, and parents, to take into consideration the effects.”

The seminar which held at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ekiti State, had in attendance the Chairman of NUJ in the state, Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela, NAWOJians, Schools and other dignitaries.
