The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Ekiti State branch has given an honorary award to the proprietor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, for his distinguished contributions to the growth of the health sector in the country.
The event, which took place on Thursday at the Alfa Begore hall of the institution attracted the crème de la crème in the society to the epoch making event.
Speaking, Ekiti NMA chairperson, Dr. Kayode Ariyibi, stated that the award is the most coveted of the three awards in the medical profession, which is conferred on personalities who are not practicing medical practitioners.
Ariyibi further stated that Afe Babalola was awarded based on his contributions to the physical and infrastructural facilities at the ABUAD teaching hospital, while describing the legal icon as an asset to Ekiti State and the nation at large.
Responding, Aare Afe Babalola appreciated the NMA for recognizing his efforts stating that he was happy to counter the beliefs of the white men who regarded Africa as a black and unprofitable continent.
He further stated that the huge amount of money spent on servicing debts and medical trips by the Nigerian government officials can be used to improve the country’s health care facilities.
“If you want success, it must start from your home. I am proud that the NMA is taking note of what we are doing here, I am inspired”.
