A Non-governmental organization (NGO) in Ekiti State, Stop-Violence Against Women In Politics, (Stop-VAWIP), has collaborated with the Ekiti state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) in order to end violence against women in politics.
The organization stated this in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Friday submitting that the organization is making concerted efforts to enhance women’s participation in politics and to stop electoral violence against women.
The statement reads, “Stop-VAWIP campaign is a nationwide initiative that helps to raise awareness and works with governmental bodies, civil societies, religious and traditional institutions to increase public awareness, intolerance of violence against women in politics”.
In a related development, Balm in Gilead Foundation for Sustainable Development (BIGIF) further stated that it will be deploying 80 community mobilizers and three senatorial district coordinators in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to different parts of the state in order to sensitize communities on voters education.
It further stated that it is working in collaboration with other agencies in the state to collaborate with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ensure that the state gubernatorial election is conducive for women participation.
The organization further urged the Ekiti State government to provide medical support to the over 40 women who were injured during the Action Democratic Party, (ADP) campaign rally in the state where many women were injured.
The convener further commends the Ekiti Women Advocacy Team (EWAT), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other stakeholders for performing their responsibility towards ensuring an inclusive, participatory, and violence free Ekiti gubernatorial election.
