The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) in Ekiti State, Comrade Pharmacist Kolapo Olatunde has cleared the air on the attack he suffered during the recently held protest in the state.
He further stated that the protest was in solidarity to protect and fight for the interest of ASUU over its prolonged strike and confrontations with the Federal Government.
Speaking at Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, the State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Pharmacist Kolapo Olatunde stated that the protest was peaceful despite the level of provocations he suffered in the hands of some union leaders who wanted to hijack the protest.
The Ekiti Labour boss further urged the Governor of Ekiti and the Chairman of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi to wade into the matter involving the Academic Staff Union Of Universities, (ASUU), and the federal government which has kept students at home for over six month.
“The Leadership of the NLC in Ekiti State wishes to use this opportunity to call on the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi who happens to be the Chairman of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum, NGF, to talk to the Federal Government that the agreement willingly signed in 2009 by the FG in favour of workers and students in the Nigerian Universities should be honoured”.
Comrade Kolapo added that the major issue that has adversely affected the Federal Government/ASUU relationship should also be revisited while urging Governor Fayemi to reach out to the President and the Minister of Labour so as to put heads together towards bringing the issue to a logical end.
The NLC boss further revealed that “The demonstration in Ekiti State was almost hijacked by some elements. They succeeded in inciting some other members to attack the leadership of NLC and desecrate the office of the chairman during the NLC/ASUU protest held on the 26th of July, 2022 even though I have forgiven those involved”.
