The National President of the Nigeria Union Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Akeem Olatunji Ambali has urged President Bola Tinubu to sign the bill granting local government autonomy in the country.
He stated that local government autonomy is in line with principles of federalism and it will hasten development at the grassroots level.
Comrade Olatunji stated this during the seventh Quadrennial state delegates’ conference of the Nigeria Union Of Local Government Employees in Ado-Ekiti.
He noted that insecurity and banditry have become major challenges affecting the unity of the country, adding that any plan contrary to granting local government autonomy is a recipe for failure.
He said, “Insecurity, banditry has become a challenge in Nigeria. President Tinubu should consider granting local government autonomy. Power must be where people reside and local government must be autonomous if we must get it right in this country.”
He further urged the federal government to provide palliatives to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal on Nigerian workers.
Adding, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, (NULGE) Ekiti State chapter, Comrade Oluseyi Olatunde who was re-elected for another term in office urged members of the union to remain optimistic while expressing appreciation to the Governor of the State, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for offsetting debts owed by his predecessor.
He, however, chided the former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi for working against local government autonomy in the country while lamenting how the former Governor owed several months of unpaid salaries and backlog of promotion arrears in the state.
Members elected at the conference included Comrade Idowu Adejuyigbe as the Vice President, Cosmas Adebayo as the Treasurer and Oladipupo Yinka as the Publicity Secretary among others.
