No fewer than two persons were killed in separate auto crashes on the Lagos-Ibadan and Ijebu-Ode expressways in Ogun State.
It was learnt from the Ogun State Police Command that the crashes occurred on Wednesday.
The Ijebu-Igbo accident occurred along the Rev. Adeboye Road at approximately 7:50 pm, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old pedestrian named Ojo Talabi.
The vehicle, a Nissan Cabstar truck with registration number APP 787 YH, driven by 35-year-old Rafi Babatunde, was loaded with plastic water bottles when it allegedly struck Talabi in the middle of the road.
Our correspondent gathered that the pedestrian was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by the vehicle. He was promptly taken to the General Hospital in Ijebu Igbo for medical care.
The command’s spokesperson, Odutola Omolola, stated that the attending doctor confirmed Talabi’s death shortly after he was brought to the hospital.
Odutola said, “The driver was immediately arrested. A mob attacked the vehicle that killed the pedestrian, damaging it in the process.
“Our men later recovered the vehicle and took it to the police station for safety and inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Officers. The driver is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.”
Similarly, another deadly auto accident occurred around 6:00 pm on the Ibadan/Lagos Motorway, close to the Redemption Camp in Mowe.
Our correspondent gathered from the state police command that the incident involved a Toyota Camry, registered as EKY 598 JM, driven by a 43-year-old man named Rafi Durodele.
Odutola stated that a male pedestrian, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was struck while trying to cross the road without checking if it was safe to do so or not.
She further stated that the pedestrian was taken to the Famobis Hospital in Pakuro for medical treatment but was later pronounced dead.
Odutola disclosed that the body of the victim had been transferred to the Patmag Idera Mortuary for an autopsy.
“The Toyota Camry was recovered and taken to the police station for safekeeping and inspection by the VIO. Investigations into both incidents are currently underway.
“We urge pedestrians to exercise caution when crossing roads and to use designated pedestrian crossings when available,” Odutola added.
