President Bola Tinubu on Saturday urged Nigerians to embrace love and religious tolerance during the funeral service of the mother of the All Progressives Congress National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, in Jos, Plateau State.
Speaking before a congregation of church leaders, political figures, and mourners, Tinubu drew from his own interfaith marriage to underscore his message of unity.
He noted that he was born a Muslim and was married to a Pastor (First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu) whom he had never tried to convince to convert to Islam.
“Hate is not an option for us,” Tinubu stated, recounting how he inherited Islam from his parents but never attempted to convert his wife, who prays for him without conflict.
“I believe in the freedom of religion; we are praying to the same God,” he added, urging Nigerians to prioritise love for fellow beings over religious differences.
The president’s call came at a time when religious tensions and violence had become a major issue of discourse in the country.
Tinubu’s address was also a call for peace in states across the country including Plateau, a state that has been a flashpoint for ethnic and religious conflicts.
