President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Tunji Bello, as “without a doubt, one of the most accomplished and tested top public servants of his generation in Lagos State” on his 65th birthday.
In a personally signed tribute on Tuesday ahead of Bello’s birthday on July 1, President Tinubu recalled their more than three decades of shared commitment to Nigeria’s progressive movement.
Tinubu praised his long-time ally’s record of service, saying his competence, creativity, and integrity had consistently distinguished him in journalism, governance, and public administration.
The President said Bello had remained a dependable friend, brother, and committed member of the progressive movement for more than three decades, recalling their shared struggle for democracy during the military era and their continued collaboration under democratic rule.
According to Tinubu, only a few individuals could match Bello’s unwavering commitment to progressive ideals, whether as a courageous journalist who confronted military dictatorship or as a dedicated public servant renowned for diligence and excellence.
He said Bello’s career, from serving as editor of leading national newspapers to becoming a Lagos State commissioner, secretary to the state government, and now head of the FCCPC, demonstrates what can be achieved when competence is combined with creativity and strong character.
Reflecting on his tenure as governor of Lagos State, Tinubu recalled appointing Bello into his cabinet in 2003 to tackle the state’s mounting waste management challenges.
He said Bello delivered remarkable results within a short period, transforming the sector so effectively that successive governors retained him, first as commissioner for the environment to consolidate the reforms and later as secretary to the state government to strengthen governance through innovative ideas.
The president also praised Bello’s broad expertise, saying his versatility draws from backgrounds in political science, law, administration, and strategic communication.
Tinubu further explained that Bello’s track record informed his decision to appoint him to lead the FCCPC after assuming office as president, saying he needed a reliable hand to reposition consumer protection in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said Bello had again justified the confidence reposed in him, noting that many Nigerians would attest to the significant impact he has made within two years of leading the commission responsible for ensuring fair competition and protecting consumers.
Expressing appreciation for Bello’s contributions to the country and the progressive movement, Tinubu prayed for Almighty Allah to grant him many more years in good health, renewed strength, and continued service to Nigeria.
