Popular Fuji musician, Alhaji Taiwo Akande Adebisi popularly known as Taye Currency, has opened up on how a near career setback prompted him to quit smoking, alcohol, and all drug-related substances 25 years ago.
He stated that the life changing decision transformed his life and career.
The artiste, whose real name is Taiwo Akande Adebisi, shared his story through his Public Relations Officer, Tope Eluyefa, describing the pivotal moment that reshaped his future at the height of his fame.
According to the Fuji star, the turning point occurred during a crucial multimillion-naira endorsement negotiation with Nigerian Breweries.
He revealed that he had been invited to a high-level boardroom meeting to discuss the unveiling of a new product across the 32 local government areas of Oyo State.
Taye Currency was regarded as one of the most sought-after Fuji musicians in the region.
He said, “on the day of the decisive meeting, I had taken a substance that affected my composure, nearly jeopardizing what would become a landmark deal.
He revealed that he was saved through the timely intervention of Funsho Ayeni, a brand manager at the company and a friend, who noticed his condition and advised him to take a short break to regain composure.
He added, “After freshening up and returning with renewed focus, the meeting proceeded successfully, culminating in a major endorsement contract.
The musician said that experience became a life long lesson that has made him completely abstained from smoking, alcohol, and other substances.
“I have enjoyed unlimited grace from God since I stopped smoking in 2001,” he said, attributing his longevity in the music industry and sustained relevance to discipline and divine favour.
Taye Currency, fondly called “Baba Honourable” by fans, used the opportunity to caution Nigerian youths against substance abuse, warning of its link to misconduct and rising mental health challenges among young people. While advising total abstinence from drugs, he urged those who consume alcohol to do so responsibly and avoid actions that could lead to violence or social disorder.
