Professor of Political Science, lawyer and journalist, Adeolu Akande has revealed that his focus will be more on youth development when he becomes the Senator representing Oyo North come 2027.
While speaking with a section of the media on Friday morning in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, Professor Akande emphatically submitted that youths in the senatorial area will benefit more during his time as Senator of the area.
His words: “My plan is to bring the attention of the Federal Government to the plight of our youths in Oyo North. It is very worrisome these days that even some graduates have taken to the business of ‘okada’ riding. We need to functionally and effectively engage our youths. Our potentials in agriculture can be more explored using our youths.”
Professor Akande expressed optimism that Oyo North will experience accelerated development if they vote him in as the Senator representing the district.
“If you go through the 13 local government areas that make up Oyo North, you will realise that they all have one natural resource or the other. However, our people have not been benefitting from this much. There is this need to utilize the resources to enhance the lives of our people. This, is another focal point I will concentrate on as Senator of Oyo North.
Adeolu Akande is from Otu in Itesiwaju Local Government Area in the Oke Ogun Zone of Oyo State. The zone holds 10 of the 13 Local Council Areas in the Oyo North Senatorial District. Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South and Orire Local Council Areas constitute the remaining three councils in the District.
However, the three council areas have held the senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for three terms through Senator Fatai Buhari who would be 12 years in the Senate by 2027.
There is a strong agitation for the Oke Ogun area that holds 24 per cent of registered voters in Oyo State but consistently return about 30 per cent of APC votes in every general election to produce either the governor of the state or the senator of the district in 2027.
Prof Akande’s requisite experience includes teaching Political Science at the University of Ibadan, Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State and the Nigerian Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILD), Abuja. He was Director of the Centre for Presidential Studies at the Igbinedion University. His public service experience includes serving as Special Assistant (Research and Communications Strategy) to the President of Nigeria (2003), Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State (2011-2013), Chairman of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)(2018- 2020) and Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)(2020 -2023). He had also served in various capacities in all presidential campaigns of the APC since 2015.
Professor Akande is easily the most popular of the three aspirants from Oke Ogun seeking the APC senatorial ticket. His associates emerged victorious and in control of nine (9) of The 13 Local Government Areas in the senatorial district in the 2026 election of party executives carried out by consensus.
