The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it seized narcotics valued at about N1.8 billion within the first quarter of 2026.
The Command disclosed that the total quantity of drugs intercepted during the period stood at 18,380 kg, comprising largely cannabis, alongside smaller quantities of psychotropic substances, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and codeine syrup.
Addressing journalists, the State Commander, Mitchel Ofoyeju, said a total of 104 suspected drug traffickers were arrested through intelligence-led operations. He added that 12,556kg of cannabis was destroyed across 10 farms covering over five hectares.
“Our commitment to combating drug-related crimes and promoting a drug-free society remains steadfast,” he said.
Ofoyeju further disclosed that 36 convictions were secured at the Federal High Court in Benin City within the period.
The command also carried out 26 anti-drug abuse sensitization programs, rehabilitated 28 individuals with drug dependence, and provided counseling for 66 others.
As part of efforts to recognise excellence and strengthen collaboration, the command honored selected officers, journalists, and a legal practitioner for their contributions to its activities.
According to Ofoyeju, the awards initiative was introduced by the chairman of NDLEA, Buba Marwa, to motivate personnel and enhance partnerships.
The commander also unveiled the maiden edition of the command’s magazine, aimed at documenting its activities and educating the public on the dangers of illicit drug use.
Meanwhile, two out of three pilgrims who were rescued from Saudi Arabia following their wrongful detention for possession of illicit drugs, Alhaja Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu and Alhaja Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, on Thursday visited the headquarters of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The pilgrims were detained over illicit drugs smuggled into their luggage by a drug syndicate in Nigeria but later released by the Saudi authorities following efforts spearheaded by the NDLEA.
At the headquarters, where they met the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), they expressed gratitude for the efforts to rescue them from the ordeal.
The three pilgrims were arrested in August, 2025, when their luggage was found to have contained illicit drugs smuggled into it by the syndicate.
The NDLEA had announced in September 2025 that the Saudi Arabian authorities had released three Nigerian pilgrims.
