The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in partnership with Junior Chamber International (JCI) Abuja Unity, has strengthened efforts to promote road safety awareness and responsible behaviour among Nigerians through the “Road Safety and You” project.
The project was held at the agency’s Conference Hall in Abuja, bringing together stakeholders from government agencies, road safety and traffic management institutions, the insurance sector, youth groups, community organisations and other relevant sectors.
The initiative aligns with NOA’s mandate of citizen education, value reorientation, and behavioural change communication, with emphasis on discipline, respect for human life, responsible citizenship, and compliance with lawful conduct on Nigerian roads.
Speaking during the programme, the NOA representative Barr. Tessy Nnalue (Director, Community Safety Awareness and Compliance) stressed the importance of sustained public enlightenment in addressing unsafe road practices and encouraging Nigerians to adopt behaviours that can help prevent avoidable crashes and loss of lives.
The project featured presentations by stakeholders, including the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), who provided practical guidance on insurance, vehicle roadworthiness, safe driving, and accident prevention.
Participants were educated on the need for regular vehicle maintenance, functional brakes and lights, tyre safety, valid documentation, observance of traffic regulations, and avoidance of dangerous practices such as speeding, distracted driving, dangerous overtaking, and driving under the influence.
The programme also featured a drama presentation, interactive panel discussion and question-and-answer session, allowing participants to seek clarification on traffic enforcement, insurance compliance, accident response, and the responsibilities of motorists and pedestrians.
The organisers, who urged participants to become road safety ambassadors by promoting patience, vigilance, mutual respect and responsible behaviour that protects lives, also encouraged them to spread road safety messages within their communities.
