German player of Nigerian descent, Karim Adeyemi has expressed delight at seeing Nigerians excel on football’s biggest stage after facing Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, saying the success of Nigerian players at the highest level fills him with happiness.
Adeyemi, who started from the bench, was on the score sheet as Spanish giants Barcelona defeated Galatasaray 4-1 at the RAMS Park.
Decision
The 26-year-old, who was born in Munich, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother, chose to represent Germany internationally but remains deeply connected to his Nigerian roots. That bond came into focus recently when a childhood photograph of Adeyemi playing street football during a visit to Ibadan went viral.
Reflecting on Tuesday’s clash against Osimhen, Adeyemi expressed satisfaction with how his side contained the Super Eagles striker, while adding that he was thrilled to see his compatriot excelling on the grandest stage.
“It is always nice to see Nigerian players on the big stage. I always feel happy for them, but I think our defence did a great job yesterday, and it was very hard for him to make any serious impact,” Adeyemi said.
Offside
The 27-year-old Osimhen was isolated by Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia at RAMS Park. A header of his was turned into the net by Baris Alper Yilmaz, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a video assistant referee check. He was flagged offside six times, the most by any player in a Champions League game this season, according to StatMuse.
Aleksey Batrakov put Galatasaray ahead in the 28th minute. Joao Cancelo levelled before the break, and Fermin Lopez and Anthony Gordon scored within three minutes of each other after it.
Adeyemi came on in the 58th minute and scored seven minutes later, firing in from the left of the area after Gabriel Jesus touched a Lamine Yamal cross into his path.
The result put Barcelona top of the standings with six points. Adeyemi credited the win to the squad’s discipline and mindset.
“You see how we play, with a winning mentality, and our performance shows we want to win everything. You see this in every match. No retreat. No surrender,” he said.
