Motorists have been urged to ensure that their vehicles are road worthy at all times and obtain the Certificate of Road Worthiness for both private and commercial vehicles to reduce incessant road accidents in Nigeria.
The Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) in Ekiti State, Mr. Adeleye Basiru gave the advice in Ado-Ekiti while briefing Journalists on the activities of his office.
Mr. Adeleye who decried the alarming rate of accidents on Nigeria highways noted that many of the vehicles plying the roads are not in good condition resulting to road crashes that lead to loss of lives and properties.
The Chief VIO who said his office was established by the government to ensure only good vehicles are put on the road and that only licensed drivers drive the vehicles added that creating public awareness for road users on road safety rules, ascertaining the technical and mechanical condition of each vehicle and organising seminars for road users are part of the responsibilities of his office.
He condemned the recalcitrant attitude of some drivers who flagrantly disobey the highway codes such as zebra crossing, danger ahead, bump ahead, sharp bend, slow down and speed limit signs etc. thereby endangering the lives of pedestrians and other road users.
Mr. Adeleye disclosed that the state government would soon embark on computerization of inspected vehicles to ensure only road worthy vehicles ply Ekiti roads while motorcyclists would also be given rider’s permit by the organization.
He lauded the efforts of Governor Kayode Fayemi-led administration on infrastructure developments which include provision of good roads in the state and urged the government to recruit more Officers into the organization to enable it cover the entire state for effective service delivery, adding that the step would boost the state IGR.
