Coordinating Principals of Secondary Schools in Ekiti State have been charged to work assiduously towards ensuring that students in public schools in the state record a minimum of 85% success in certificate examinations in order to justify the government huge investment in the education sector.
The Executive Secretary of Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mr. Alani Daramola gave the charge in Ado Ekiti at a meeting with the Coordinating Principals in all the 16 Local Government Areas of the state in his office.
He urged Principals to monitor teaching and learning activities in their various schools meticulously and ensure that teachers concentrate more on certificate classes and the key subjects which include English Language and Mathematics.
The TESCOM Executive Secretary asked them to deploy every success attainment strategy devoid of examination malpractices for the certificate classes comprising SSS 3 and JSS 3, including the use of past questions and marking schemes by WAEC and NECO to coach these certificate classes, especially the SSS 3.
He equally charged them to enlist the interest and cooperation of all their teachers and Vice Principals in this effort to improve students’ academic performance in Ekiti public schools.
The Executive Secretary advised the Coordinating Principals to delegate duties to their Vice Principals and also carry along the PTA in the school administration to make the task less burdensome.
Daramola also informed them that TESCOM will go on air to sensitize the students on the need for them to be diligent and attend classes regularly and punctually while officials from the Commission will visit the schools to monitor activities of the students and teachers and the level of preparedness for the external examinations.
He explained that the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education and the Teaching Service Commission will continue to handle issues that bother on Gender Based Violence, harassment of teachers and other related matters, urging that any acts of indiscipline that could disrupt the school system should be reported to the Commission promptly.
Daramola reminded them that the banned on the use of the premises of public schools and facilities for any social activities still subsists, noting that any erring Principal would be sanctioned accordingly.
Responding on behalf of others, the Coordinating Principal of Ijero Local Government Area, Mr. Victor Amele commended the government for recruitments of new teachers and redistribution of teachers and core subject teachers to ensure that all schools have teachers to attend to students.
He assured that the Coordinating Principals will collaborate with all stakeholders and deploy every legitimate and socially acceptable strategy to improve the academic performance of students in both internal and external examinations as desired by the government to justify the confidence reposed in them.
