A socio-political group in Ibadan, the Assurance Group has described the elevation of Ibadan High Chiefs to smaller Obas as a move by the Oyo State Governor to answer the overwhelming calls of concerns citizens of Ibadan in the country and in the Diasporas.
The group in a statement issued and signed by its coordinator Comrade Ibrahim Yusuf said the findings of the group revealed that Government’s position is in line with modern trends and what is obtainable generally in the traditional and Obaship institutions in the South West geo-political zone of the country.
The group also said this is also a direct response to the request of majority of the Olubadan–In-Council for a review as well as the elevation of the Olubadan to the level of an Imperial Majesty with Royal Majesties beneath the Imperial stool, adding that for a government which professes to be modernizing Oyo State, this may not be out of place.
“We know the populace would still come to appreciate the gesture of the governor when the exercise is well implemented. It is good for Ibadan and it is good for our history. Nothing is changing in the Ibadan chieftaincy system. Ibadan has been disadvantaged for too long vis-a-vis other towns in Yorubaland. What we are about to do now has been done in Ijebuland, Egbaland, Ekiti and Ondo.”
The group, however, in the statement urged the public to disregard the hate speeches being carried around by the oppositions against the governor on the social media saying the governor is “on the side of the majority and truth shall always prevail against any falsehood being peddled by the opposition”.
