Nigeria’s home based Super Eagles showed their superiority in the sub-region as they defeated Sierra Leone 2-0 in their opening game at the ongoing 2017 WAFU Cup tournament in Ghana.
Goals from Osas Okoro and Moses Eneji ensured that Nigeria defeated the stubborn Sierra Leonean side on Monday night.
The tension soaked clash took place at the Cape Coast Stadium, with the Enugu Rangers wing back and Plateau United ace finding the back of the net.
It was a tale of late showers as Nigeria took the lead through Okoro’s brilliant free kick in the 84th minute of action.
Substitute Eneji made the game safe with another cracking effort with three minutes left on the clock.
Sierra Leone rued missed opportunities as they were denied by the team skipper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, who was outstanding in goal for the Yusuf Salisu managed side.
The win pushed the African Nations Championship (CHAN) bound team to the group stage of the competition.
Eight teams will be divided into two groups of four teams each in the tourney.
Hosts Ghana and Guinea are among the teams that have made it into the group phase, after the Ghanaians survived a tough duel with Gambia 1-0 and Guinea came from behind to edge Guinea Bissau 2-1.
