Constitution Amendment: We’ll Support LG Autonomy – Ogun House

The Ogun State House of Assembly has reassured the management of Local Government Councils and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of its resolve to ensure the  speedy consideration and  passage of the Local Government Autonomy in the ongoing 1999 Constitution amendment process by the National Assembly when transmitted to the State Houses of Assembly.

The Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs led by Hon. Olusola Sonuga gave the assurance in continuation of the budget assessment visit to Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Council, Agbara/Igbesa LCDA, Ado-Odo LCDA, Iju/Atan/Ilogbo LCDA and Sango/Ijoko LCDA.

Sonuga recalled hat the Assembly in its bid to ensure overall development of the State had in the previous amendment  unanimously supported the autonomy of the councils to engender more development at the grassroot with a view to complementing the cardinal programmes of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun- led Government at the grassroots.

In their remarks, members of the Committee including, Honourables Akinpelu Aina, Akanbi Bankole, Ganiyu Oyedeji and Olayiwola Ojodu stressed that the creation of the 37 LCDAs in addition to the twenty Local Councils would further open up the State to greater opportunities, with a charge on the Chairmen of the Councils to set more machineries in motion towards increasing their revenue drive.

They harped on the need for the Chairmen to consolidate on the achievements of their predecessors to put the LCDAs on the path of development process for the overall turn around of  rural communities in the State.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman, Ado-Ota /Ota Local Government Council, Bashir Adeniji said the Council had generated a total sum of N399.4m as revenue  between January and August, 2017.

Giving the breakdown of the revenue generated, Adeniji, explained that the Local Government generated N78.3m as Internally Generated Revenue, while the remaining N312m was gotten from statutory allocation and grant from the State government.

The LCDA Chairmen, Saeed Alagbe, Ebenezer Oniyide, Jamiu Ajayi and Fatai Lawal, who all took their turn to present their budget performance for the period under review promised to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate by embarking on more viable projects for the benefit of all.
