The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged all the Caretaker Chairmen for local government and local council development areas in the State to give adequate attention and priority to maintenance of roads in order to accelerate good road network at local level.

The House made this resolution sequel to a motion moved by a lawmaker representing Oluyole State constituency, Hon. Muideen Wahab on the need to mandate the local government and local council development areas in Oyo State to engage in the regular maintenance of local roads for socio economic development of their domain.

While presenting the motion, Hon. Wahab observed that the local government areas in Oyo State for years back have failed in the maintenance of local roads rather, they do engage in the construction of new ones.

He added that the department of works designated in each local government that were duty bound to maintain local roads within their domain were not living up to expectation which affects the rate of development at grassroot level and hinders farmers from taking their agricultural products in the rural areas to the urban areas.

The House unanimously adopted the resolve as prayed in the motion urging the Executive arm of government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters to issue directives to the Chairmen of Local Government and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) by promptly giving due approval for them to take roads maintenance as priority in order to accelerate good road network at local level; urging the Director of Works Department in the respective local government and LCDAs in the State to be alive to their responsibility by regularly engaging in the maintenance of local roads in order to boost socio-economic activities of the rural areas as this will go a long way in promoting good governance in the State.

The resolve also urged the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies in the State to check those extorting monies from law abiding citizens under the disguise of filling damaged portion on the roads.

The House during the plenary also approved the names of the fourteen Caretaker Chairmen sent to it for approval by the Governor on Tuesday 7th November, 2017 after receiving the report of the committee on local government and Chieftaincy affairs presented by Hon. Bolaji Badmos that screened the nominees on Wednesday 8th November, 2017 and found all of them appoint-able for the position.
