The Road Accident Information & Rescue Organization has solicited the support of media organizations in Oyo State through the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council to assist in creating awareness campaign to raise funds for the purchase of ambulances and other equipment to provide prompt rescue assistance to road accident victims.

This was contained in a letter delivered by the National Rescue Commandant of the organization, Cdr Okanlawon Bamigboye to the Chairman of the union, Comrade Adewumi Faniran during a courtesy visit paid to his office at Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan recently.

Rescue Commander Bamigboye disclosed that there was need to improve on the level of awareness campaign in order to address the issue of carnage on Nigerian roads.

He added that this was what necessitated the partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, aiming at renewing the long standing relationship between the organization and the union.

He noted the Road Accident Information & Rescue Organization was founded with objectives of addressing carnage on our roads, environment and to serve as an advocacy group for safety consciousness among road users in the country.

“The Emergency Rescue Information Control Centre (ERICC) was established in 2009, it is a control room where operators receive and answer incoming emergency telephone calls from members of the public in need and requesting for rescue assistance and immediately dispatch information received to our Rescue Marshals and other rescue agencies, such as FRSC, Fire Service, Nigeria Police, NSCDC, NEMA, State Ambulance Services, State Emergency Management Agency and other Emergency Rescue Services providers, for them to dispatch the relevant resources such as personnel, ambulance and equipments to where they are needed for prompt rescue assistance.

“The center provides relevant information to hospital and doctors that would treat rescued victims and have access to information about relatives, as well as to offer assistance to victims by tracing their relations and linking them up as quickly as humanly possible.

“It is our desire and ambition to have a twenty-four hours effective running free ambulance services on our major roads and highways to complement the effort of other emergency service providers by providing prompt and rapid skilled first aid assistance to accident victims and taking them to nearest hospitals,” he submitted.

Rescue Commander Okanlawon established that the main reason why most victims are unable to access care is the missing emergency medical services (EMS), adding that in most parts of Nigeria, ambulances, where available, lack equipment and only used for patient transportation rather than decisive medical intervention.

He therefore, sought the support of media organizations through the Nigeria Union of Journalists to assist in creating campaign awareness to the members of the public to contribute to the Special Road Ambulance Fund to provide prompt rescue assistance to unfortunate victims of road traffic crashes.

Meanwhile, Chairman, NUJ, Oyo State Council, Comrade Adewumi Faniran in his response, promised the support of the union to do whatever is in his capacity to assist the rescue organization to carry out its humanitarian services effectively and efficiently to the people of Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
