Ajimobi, Oluwo Task Journalists As Oyo NUJ Begins Press Week

The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi have charged journalists to ensure they carry out their duties with passion and always consider the ethics guiding the journalism profession.

The duo gave the admonition during the opening ceremony marking this year’s Press Week of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Oyo State council, held at Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who was represented by the state Commisioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Toye Arulogun, congratulated journalists in Oyo State for the celebration of their press week, saying that the major expectation of the present administration in the state as far as journalism is concern is to see that journalists operate within the ambit of their ethics and professionalism.

Governor Ajimobi said that verification of facts and figures in the practice of journalism is very important so as not to mislead the general public.

He implored journalists in the state to join hands with government to promote the state.

Governor Ajimobi promised the support of his administration to the union particularly towards the hosting of golden anniversary of the Press Centre next year.

In his royal blessing, Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi advised journalists to always be guided by the passion for the profession instead of money.

Oba Rasheed Akanbi, while reacting to his alleged controversial nature, he noted that if truly we want progress in Nigeria there is need to check on the past to assist in planning for the future.

While commending the current administration in the country for her effort in stemming corruption, he advised traditional leaders to as well join hands with government to assist in fighting corruption traditionally.

In his paper presentation on “Recession; Restructuring: The Way Forward”, the Post Master General and CEO, Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST), Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi disclosed that NIPOST through her various activities has contributed to the country’s improved national income.

He opined that Nigeria is not a failed state inspite of the challenge of monolithic economy coupled with that of Niger Delta environmental pollution, insurgency in the North, Fulani herdsmen crisis and intractable internecine wars among ethnic groups.

Barrister Adegbuyi, who was represented by the Director of Human Resources, Alhaji Mahmud stated that it is part of NIPOST’s aims to bring youths together through exploration of entertainment industry to expose them to the boundless opportunities that the company is poised to offer.

Among people that attend the opening ceremony was the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Media and Strategy, Mr Yomi Layinka.
