N98.6bn 2018 Budget Passes Second Reading In Ekiti

Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Right Honourable (Pastor) Kola Oluwawole, has restated the commitment of the House to an all-round development of the State capital, Ado-Ekiti, as well as other major towns and communities in the state.

According to a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Stephen Gbadamosi, in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, Oluwawole gave the pledge at plenary of the House shortly before the state 2018 Appropriation Bill of N98.6 billion passed through second reading.

The Speaker, who described the appropriation bill as “a complete budget,” noted that “Ekiti State has always taken budgetary exercise very seriously. We are more than ever committed to the development of this state in all ramifications. That is why we are pleased with such a budget that touches every sector. All our major towns and communities are also important to us; and this budget has a lot to offer them.

“It is also noteworthy that the budget makes provision for some local governments that had not been touched earlier in the duration of this administration. And to buttress our commitment to total development, this budget has given the economic sector the proper attention it deserves.”

In their submission over the document, members of the Assembly, including acting leader of Business, Honourable Ekundayo Akinleye; chairman, House committee on Finance and Appropriation, Honourable Abiola Jeje; Honourables Dele Fajemilehin, Wale Ayeni, Titilayo Owolabi-Akerele, and Cecilia Dada, among others, unanimously praised the contents and details of the bill.

The lawmakers spoke in one voice that the budget had to be given speedy passage so as not to truncate the enjoyment of dividend of prudent management of the state resources under the present administration.

They, particularly, lauded the budget for according priority to completion of all ongoing projects spread across the three senatorial districts of the state, calling for the people’s support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government of Dr Peter Ayodele Fayose even beyond the expiration of the governor’s tenure in 2018, expressing hope that there would be resources to make the buget perform at least 90 per cent.

The House finally committed the bill to the House Committee of Finance and Appropriation for further action, while mandating government Ministries, Departments and Parastatals (MDAs) to begin appearance before it for defense of their budgets as from Monday, 11 December.
