Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Ogun State have been cautioned by the state’s House of Assembly to be more civil while apprehending smugglers in border towns in the State so as to avoid killing of innocent citizens.
Speaker Suraju Ishola Adekunbi made the appeal while responding to the submission of a members representing Imeko/Afon State Constituency, Hon. Jemili Akingbade, who spoke under personal explanation during the Plenary at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Adekunbi stated that the State Government had waded into the matter to prevent reoccurrence, saying there was need for the men of the Nigeria Customs Service to always exercise restraint in the use of fire arms to prevent avoidable deaths.
Condoling with the families of those who lost their lives in the incident, the Speaker called on the paramilitary agency to carry out their operations with utmost professionalism.
Meanwhile, the State House of Assembly has urged the State Chapter of the Joint Health Workers’ Union (JOHESU) to shelve its industrial action in the best interest of the people of the State.
Adekunbi gave the admonition in his response to the remarks of a member representing Abeokuta North State Constituency, Hon. Olayiwola Ojodu under Personal Explanations with a call on the union to put an end to the solidarity strike embarked upon in support of its National body, while appealing to the national body to engage the Federal Government in a dialogue to put an end into the on-going industrial dispute.
He also pleaded with the union to be patient with the Federal Government in the process of fulfilling its obligation to the health sector, just as he acknowledged that the Senator Ibikunle Amosun led- administration in the State remained committed to promoting workers welfare, particularly the health sector as envisioned in the State five cardinal programmes.
Also at the plenary, a bill titled: H.B No. 026/OG/2018- The Harmonised Revenue and Other Charges Law was read for the first time on the floor of the Assembly by the Clerk of the Assembly, Engr. Lanre Bisiriyu.
