Osimhen Reveals How Olamide, Reminisce’s Songs Keep Him Inspired

Victor Osimhen...

Victor Osimhen is Nigeria’s ‘nextgen’, his performance at Lille so far this season has courted the attention of Europe’s elite clubs, most especially from England.

The likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, and Spurs have been joined in the race for the Nigerian by Spanish heavyweights Barcelona.

Osimhen has bagged 13 goals while grabbing five assists in all competitions for Christian Galtier’s side.

For a 20-year-old whose only productive topflight experience was in the Belgian Jupiler league with Sporting Charleroi, the secret to his blistering start to life in France was simply ignoring harsh criticism.

“For me, I think I am not distracted by others. I am really focused on doing what I love doing most, staying on track is the main thing,” he revealed to Sports Extra.

Truly, fending off distractions has been one of the main factors to Osimhen’s rise to stardom.

His ability to stay off the radar and focus on his game was not sudden. It was a trait that had well define his early humble years in the sprawling dumpsite of Olusosun, Ojota.

He once told France Football in an interview in October, where he recounted how it was tough growing up. The Olusosun dumpsite was his playing ground at the same time his means to eking out a living.

“Where I grew up, people live on the other side of an open dump. With my friends, we went there every Friday or Sunday to find crampons and shoes. We stayed there for a long time. It was funny! We saw it as a game but when you think about it… It was always a fight. We were looking for crampons,” he continued.

“Sometimes you see, you found yourself with a Nike on the right foot and then you start looking for the other foot … And finally, you find the left foot and it’s a Reebok! My sister patched everything up and it was good. It was survival.”

It is this humble background that has kept him on course, steadying him from veering off the road to greatness.

His background has kept him in sync with the street. He doesn’t lose sight of this and has seemingly embraced a ‘street song’ before stepping on the pitch for Lille.

“I love Olamide, Reminisce. Those guys inspire me. I listen to their music before games.

He continues, “I am inspired by their songs, I feel a kind of connection when I listen to them. It pumps me up ahead of match-days,” In an interview with Sports Extra.

He added, “I am particularly fond of Olamide’s Kingshii.”

The 20-year-old is presently enjoying his Lille adventure but, was quick to highlight how his formative years at Charleroi prepared him for success at Stade Pierre-Maurry.

He admitted that his spell in Belgium was key to his seamless transition into life in the French topflight.

“I did so well in (Charleroi) and quickly pictured myself in the league and in the team. There were many quality players in the team, mine was just to score goals but, it wasn’t that easy. I admit it was a learning process, I had to work extra just to be at the level I am now.”

Playing in foreign leagues where English is not the main language might be tasking for players with Anglophone background, but how does the Eagles’ hit-man cope?

“I have a teacher who teaches me three times a week. I will I will be very fluent soon, he says,”
