The Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Gbenga Agbeyo, has said that plans were in progress to construct Ajolagun Bridge in Ikere-Ekiti.

Agbeyo gave the information while addressing the people of the area who protested with placards into the Ministry in Ado-Ekiti.

The Commissioner, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Mr. Olufemi Osasona, said the Governor has approved the construction of the bridge and the fund is under processing, adding that the contractor would move to the site as soon as the fund is ready.

According to him, Ekiti State Government was partnering with the World Bank to put permanent concrete channelization in the areas.

He disclosed that the World Bank Officials would arrive Ekiti State shortly to inspect all the areas ravaged by flood which have been mapped out by the State Government.

The Leader of the Community, Elder Afuye George, who spoke on behalf of the people, appealed to the State Government to expedite action on the construction of the bridge before the onset of the raining season, stressing that the bridge has become a death trap to the residents of the area.

He explained that residents are moving out of the place in droves as a result of the ordeal they experienced in the area.

Another resident of the area, Elder Olorunfemi Isaac, who spoke with journalists, lamented that it has been very difficult for the primary and secondary school pupils in the area to cross to their schools.

Agbeyo, in response, stressed the commitment of the present administration to the welfare of the people, adding that government was working round the clock to provide a more conducive environment for the people of the state.
