The Oyo State House of Assembly has charged the executive arm of government to ensure total compliance with laws preventing discrimination against people living with disabilities.
This was contained in a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North state constituency, Hon. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji and seconded by Hon. Yusuf Adebisi, representing Ibadan South West state constituency 1 and Deputy Chief Whip of the House.
She made the call while presenting a motion on “Improving the Quality of Lives of Person Living Disability Through Provision of Gainful Employment and Job Opportunities.”
Hon. Oladeji identified lack of gainful employment and opportunity as the major challenges of persons living with disabilities.
The lawmaker stated that enforcement of the Oyo State Persons Living Disability Law was enacted in 2018 will go a long way in addressing discrimination against people living with disabilities and getting them jobs to keep body and soul together.
She urged the state government to ensure that public and private organizations comply with laws guiding the interest of people living with disabilities to allow them have access to necessary facilities enjoyed by able bodied people.
Hon. Oladeji also suggested the establishment of agency for the elimination of decriminalization against people living with disabilities as provided by the 1999 constitution as amended in section 3 (1).
Hon. Seyi Adisa, representing Afijio state constituency, while commending the mover of the motion, praised Governor Seyi Makinde for running an all-inclusive government.
Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi affirmed the five percent of job opportunity promised by the governor of the state, Engr. Seyi Makinde.
He stated that the House Committee on Education has met with Chairman, Oyo State Teaching Service Commission to ensure that their appointment becomes reality.
While passing the resolutions, the Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, urged the governor to put measures in place for the establishment of Agency for the Elimination of Discrimination Against People Living with Disabilities.
